July moved the AI question from 'how big' to 'who pays, and can it be built'

What the broker flow itself showed across July — every signal dated to the day it appeared and traceable to the document or chart that carried it. Read against the four themes of the fund.

The month in five arcs

AI: A three-act repricing, fully dated. Act 1 (1-10 Jul): the exits and the questions -- Blackstone sells Virginia and QTS abandons the largest planned campus (3-4th), the token-economics warning goes public with a 46% investment-vs-sales gap attached (4th), MUFG asks whether cashflows can justify the buildout (8th), token prices are cut (10th). Act 2 (14-17 Jul): policy and credit answer -- credit first: Goldman urged AI-debt hedges on the 7th, then NY permit pause, hyperscaler bond carnage, Mag 7 and semis sold together for the first time. Act 3 (20-26 Jul): the evidence consolidates -- token spend -26% from peak, record ETF creation into a falling tape, Hyperion at 95, $31tn capitalised against $9tn of baseline PDV. The counter-view (UBS, 24th) concedes the frame: maturing, not growing.

Power Generation: The inverse trade. Sell-side cut forecasts at the bottom (HSBC, 9th), the geopolitical leg rebuilt through Hormuz and the Red Sea, and Brent finished +41% off the low into 8th-percentile OECD inventories. Power equipment decoupled from the AI selloff outright: record orders at GEV while announcement-driven AI exposure was sold.

Energy Infrastructure: Quietly bid all month. Goldman defended its energy overweight against investor pushback (13th) before the tape validated it; TTF forecasts raised; secured power, transmission access and completed assets explicitly premium-priced in the deliverability debate.

Minerals: Two stories. Memory: 'chipflation' named early, IBM confirmed hoarding behaviour, then China priced $10bn of future DRAM supply into the top of the cycle. Precious/industrial: gold above $4,000 but labelled a 'lost year' while silver took leadership (+4.3% w/w) and copper's supply thesis got earnings confirmation. And the bridge finding of the hardening pass: by 11 Jul memory prices were in the FOMC minutes as an inflation driver, tying the minerals theme directly into the rates channel that priced the AI complex.

The connecting trade: oil to rates to AI. Crude's rebuild forced hike odds to 70.9% and the 30Y to a 2007 high, and the discount rate is the single biggest input to what the AI buildout is worth -- Goldman's own sensitivity runs $5tn to $22tn on that axis alone. The four themes are one chain this month, and the brokers documented every link.

Week by week

1-5 Jul

The overture: every August risk previewed in five days

Anything but quiet. Momentum had its worst day since 'Vax Day' 2020, quant funds cracked after their worst five-day stretch since 2023, and the AI rout 'exposed Wall Street's $270bn speculation machine'. Blackstone sold out of Northern Virginia and QTS abandoned the world's largest planned data-center campus. The token-economics warning went public with a telecom-bust comparison attached. Against all of it: buy-the-dip calls on crude at $72.5 -- the single best-timed call in the month's flow.

6-12 Jul

Every thread of the AI repricing is named in one week

The week the month's whole story was written in advance: the September-hike debate opens (MS, 6th), the memory crisis is named (6th), the financing question is asked in plain words (MUFG, 8th), datacenter ABS enters the vocabulary (8th), token prices are cut (10th), and the momentum unwind goes systemic via Korea (10th). Anyone reading titles alone had the Q3 map by Friday. Hardened by primary reads after the archive conversion: Goldman urged clients to hedge AI debt on the 7th as Amazon prefunded $25bn, and by the 11th soaring memory prices had reached the FOMC minutes as an inflation risk.

13-19 Jul

The repricing arrives: credit first, then everything

NY pauses 50MW+ permits (14th). BofA splits the semis complex (15th). Then the break: hyperscaler bond 'carnage', Mag 7 and semis sold together for the first time, Moonshot's release hits Asia AI baskets 5-8%, and TS Lombard drops its equity bull call (17th). Gold sits above $4,000 wearing a 'lost year' label while CXMT prices $10bn of future DRAM supply. The weekend close of the week is the month's hinge: 'age of scaling is over' (GS), the Kimi K3 alarms, China's 48-ton gold purchase, and a quantified divergence -- retail pouring $50bn into semis while hedge funds finished their largest tech selling on record.

20-26 Jul

Oil takes the wheel; the four majors diverge

Houthi strikes on Saudi tankers put Brent through $100 (+41% off the June low) into inventories with no Western buffer. Rates answer: 2Y +18bp, September odds 70.9%, 30Y at the 2007 high. The AI complex reprices further -- but power equipment (GEV record orders), gas infrastructure (TTF raised) and copper/silver hold or strengthen. The month ends with the four majors pointing different directions for the first time since March.

DateThemeSignalSource
01 JulAI & Data CentersRampart: the small-model thread opens
Goldman's 1-delta desk flags Rampart, a 14.7MB in-browser model doing privacy redaction with no server at all, as 'probably the most interesting release overnight'. The efficiency threat to hyperscaler compute demand is on a desk note by 1 Jul.
GS 1-delta via Zero Hedge, 30 Jun-1 Jul
01 JulBroader MacroFed independence ruling absorbed
Supreme Court ruling leads the morning notes; MUFG frames it 'Fed independence maintained, for now'. Gasoline below $4.00/gal for the first time since March supports the disinflation read.
GS morning, MUFG Asia FX, Raymond James
01 JulPower GenerationBuy-the-dip on crude at $72.5
Import-demand research argues crude buying picks up quickly with Brent at $72.5; JPM follows with 'The Return of Oil' and 'Saudi's potential' within the week.
broker research in the 1 Jul flow; JPM 9-10 Jul
02 JulBroader Macro'The hawkish Fed trade is nearing its end'
A dated contrarian rates call, printed 2 Jul. Three weeks later September hike odds stood at 70.9%. The flow carried both sides of the rates debate all month; this one lost.
2 Jul flow
03 JulAI & Data CentersBlackstone exits data centers
Blackstone sells its Northern Virginia data-center stakes for $3.5bn, then QTS walks away from Prince William Digital Gateway, the 2,100-acre project that would have been the world's largest campus, after years of resident lawsuits. Smart-money exit plus community resistance, ten days before NY's permit pause.
Blackstone/QTS coverage, 3-4 Jul
04 JulAI & Data CentersToken economics warning goes public
The Silicon Data token-expenditure index is down almost 20% from its May high and falling 11 of 12 days. Allianz puts the AI investment-vs-sales gap at 46%, worse than the 32% at the 2001 telecom bust. The honest caveat is printed too: the index blends price and usage, so the bull read is 'digestion'.
Bloomberg via Zero Hedge, 4 Jul
06 JulBroader MacroSeptember-hike debate opens
Morgan Stanley publishes 'Assessing the Case for a September Hike' and 'Hike to Wait and See' the same day. The month's dominant macro thread starts here, three weeks before hike odds peak.

07 JulAI & Data CentersGoldman: start hedging AI debt
Ten days before the 'carnage' headline: Goldman urges clients to hedge the AI debt bubble as ORCL falls 50% from its 2 Jun high, CDS widens across ORCL/CoreWeave/SpaceX, and Amazon scrambles a $25bn bond sale to prefund capex before the window shuts. The credit thread of Act 2 starts here.
Zero Hedge / GS, dated 7 Jul; flowed 10 Jul
08 JulAI & Data CentersThe financing question is named
MUFG asks 'Can future cashflows justify the AI buildout' the same day Goldman's desk covers datacenter ABS and data sovereignty. The month ends with the answer trading at 95 cents on the dollar.
MUFG Asia FX talk, GS Basics, 8 Jul
09 JulPower GenerationHSBC cuts oil: 'mini glut now, surplus later'
Sell-side capitulation printed within days of the bottom. Brent had based at ~$71 on 30 Jun; it was above $100 within four weeks of the note.
HSBC oil markets, 9 Jul
10 JulAI & Data Centers'Token unmaxxing': price cuts
AI model makers cut token prices; Goldman's 1-delta desk warns of a 'very rotational market'. The revenue side of the buildout starts deflating in public. GPT-5.6 and Grok 4.5 launch into it.
Zero Hedge / GS 1-delta, 10 Jul
10 JulAI & Data CentersMomo unwind goes systemic
'Samsung, semis, the strait and sanctions spark market maelstrom, momo meltdown.' Samsung fades on the GS TMT desk two days earlier; Korea becomes the stress transmission channel.
Zero Hedge, GS TMT, 8-10 Jul
11 JulMineralsMemory prices reach the Fed
FOMC minutes warn inflation 'would remain elevated due to strong AI-related demand'; the Fed's semi-annual report repeats it. Apple, Microsoft and Dell hike device prices up to 25%. Chipflation stops being a sector story and becomes a monetary-policy input -- the bridge from the minerals theme to the rates channel.
Zero Hedge, dated 11 Jul; flowed 13 Jul
13 JulAI & Data CentersSemis vol at dotcom frequency
Semiconductors moved 3%+ fifteen times in thirty sessions, last seen in the dotcom era; SOX had been ~80% above its 200dma in early June, exceeded only by 2000, now back to a normal band. The same note insists most fundamental data still points the other way -- two-sided by its own author.

Goldman EU&M pulse, 13 Jul
14 JulAI & Data Centers'Useful output per watt'
Goldman's Basics leads with 'useful output per watt'. The debate moves from how much compute gets built to what each watt returns -- the framing the deliverability critique needs.
GS Basics, 14 Jul
14 JulAI & Data CentersNY pauses 50MW+ permits
Hochul signs a one-year environmental-permitting pause on large data centers. 155 local moratoria already active across 40 states; TX links grid-upgrade costs to large loads. Deliverability risk becomes policy, not opinion.

17 JulAI & Data Centers'Did Goldman pop the AI debt bubble?'
Hyperscaler bond 'carnage' becomes the headline. For the first time in the unwind, Mag 7 and semis are sold together -- capex funder and capex receiver repriced at once. Moonshot's model release knocks Asia AI baskets 5-8% the same session.
Zero Hedge 17 Jul; JPM morning briefing 17 Jul
17 JulAI & Data Centers'Age of scaling is over'
Goldman's desk calls the hardware liquidation a de-grossing event and frames CXMT (200x oversubscribed) as China creating a fourth scaled DRAM competitor; 'China erases America's AI lead' runs the same evening, and the Kimi K3 alarm pieces follow through the weekend. The open-weights shock has its broker moment here, not on the 26th.

17 JulBroader MacroTS Lombard: 'We are no longer bullish equities'

Zero Hedge / UBS, dated 17 Jul; flowed 20 Jul
18 JulBroader MacroRetail buys what the pros sell

Compiled from the fund's broker intake for July — roughly 1,600 documents received across 24 trading days from 30+ research desks — with primary document reads and direct readings of the chart images inside the PDFs where the numbers appear nowhere in the text (token expenditure, ETF share creation, SPV bond pricing, inventory percentiles, rate-hike odds). Each ledger entry carries two dates: the dateline of the signal, shown here, and available — the first morning it was readable in the fund's broker flow — in the machine-readable ledger. Eleven of thirty differ, by one to seven days; verdicts about trading with or against a signal are graded on availability, not the dateline.
